What are the eligibility requirements to join the Self-Determination Program?

Self-Determination Program (SDP) Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligibility: You must have a developmental disability and currently receive services from a California regional center or be a new regional center client.
  • Age Requirement: You must be over three years old. If under three, eligibility must be established through the Lanterman Act.
  • Living Situation: You must live in the community and have the freedom to make life choices. Individuals in licensed long-term healthcare facilities are generally not eligible unless using the SDP to transition out of such a facility.
Once enrolled, you can remain in the SDP even if you transfer to a different regional center. If you choose to leave the program voluntarily, you may return to traditional regional center services, but re-enrollment in the SDP will not be permitted for at least twelve months.
